Queer Resources
I came out as a lesbian in my early twenties. The 1970’s were a different time for LGBT folks. Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans were the only letters commonly used at the time. A lot has changed since then.
AIDS had a huge impact as the public began to realize their uncle or neighbor or choir director was “one of them”. Celebrities came out and some lost their careers. Many countries now have marriage equality. The L Word represented a move to mainstream media in 2004.
When I grew up in Saskatchewan Canada in the 60’s, I had no idea there was such a thing as a lesbian or gay man. For better or worse, everyone is aware now.
AND there are still laws and social sanctions against people who identify as queer, 2SLGBTQIA+. A shooter opened fire in Pulse nightclub in 2016 killing 49 people. Trans people continue to experience more violence and targeting in politics and their neighborhoods. We have a complicated history of oppression and injustice.
When I came out, I couldn’t wait to “find my people”. I moved from a smaller center to a big city. I remember being so excited (and a bit scared) as I slowly found my way into a new community. Now we are able to connect with folks like us through online resources.
Robin and Chris, two members of our Stillpoint community, offer resources that will help if you are looking to connect. I know them both and highly recommend their groups, podcast and in person retreats.
