Teaching Breath and Nervous System Regulation

Everyone is talking about the nervous system these days

Join me this fall and learn to teach people how to breathe and settle their nervous systems. Develop class plans and materials for a 4 week class at your local yoga studio, library, medical or therapy clinic, community center or online.

Our nervous systems are struggling with heightened fear and anxiety. We long for peace and safety and for a mind that is able to focus and is not consumed with catastrophic thinking and anxiety. Yoga, meditation and mindfulness build strength in our mind, body and nervous system over time. We can also help people immediately with some basic survival skills.

Our nervous system has one job

It is 100% committed to keeping us alive. It has a negativity bias (better safe than sorry) to help keep us alive. We are always unconsciously assessing our level of safety and danger in our environment and with other people.

We are all uncomfortable with not knowing, and our mind will often explore every possible worst case scenario thinking that will make us safer. This actually works against us. Our brain believes our thoughts and we sap our energy through the stress of imagining the worst.

As we pay attention in our body, we realize we are holding our breath and our shoulders are up around our ears. We are in a survival response, preparing to flee or fight. Then we remember to breathe. What a relief! You can bring that relief to your friends, family, students and community.

Our nervous system is fairly straight forward. We assess and respond to threat. We can learn reliable tools and practices to reduce hypervigilance and anxiety. We become stronger and more emotionally regulated.

The stress of being in a survival response is hard on our body and our mind. When in survival mode we are unable to access kindness and compassion for ourselves or others.

As we learn to more reliably regulate our nervous system, our hearts open up, we heal old hurts, and we experience more joy and connection in daily life.

The depth of simplicity

All of the practices in our class together are presented in a simple manner, with trauma informed foundations, without jargon, and that are understandable and accessible to the general public. When we know our nervous system, breath and mind on a deep level, that is when we are able to make it simple.
